Muscle injury of the shoulder

A rotator cuff injury refers to an injury or tear in the muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. The rotator cuff consists of four muscles: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis.

Rotator cuff injury can be caused by acute trauma (such as a fall on the arm) or by repetitive overhead movements that lead to wear and tear over time. Typical symptoms of a rotator cuff injury are:
  • Pain in the shoulder that worsens with movement, especially when lifting the arm.
  • Limited mobility and strength in the shoulder.
  • Pain that can radiate to the upper arm.
Diagnosis of a rotator cuff injury is usually made through a combination of physical examination, medical history, and imaging techniques such as X-rays or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Treatment of a rotator cuff injury depends on the severity of the injury. In many cases, conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications can help relieve symptoms and strengthen the shoulder. In more severe cases that do not respond to conservative treatments, surgery may be considered.

If you suspect you may have a rotator cuff injury, it is important to see a doctor who can accurately diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment. Each injury is individual, and only a medical professional can provide appropriate evaluation and care.
